I'm going to transfer this discussion to the CASILIST as it has no
relevance to Current Weather happenings, which is what the CASI-SR list
is for. For reminders on what should go to what list, please see

I got one of those Stormwise detectors a couple years ago, for about
$50. It was "assemble your own." But despite a good amount of time
spent with my father, who is an amatuer electronic guru, we could not
get the thing to work at all. We gave up, and when I obtained the Texas
Weather Station that I have now it came with a sensor that I suspect was
made by them (it was the long tube) but was wired directly into the
weather station. This is the lightning detector that currently plots on
the CASI Live Weather Station page at
http://www.weatherwatchers.org/wxstation/liveobs.shtml

I think that the stormwise detectors they have now are no assembly
required so there is probably a much better chance of getting them to
work. They will only, to my knowledge, detect "Lightning Counts" which
is a combination of lightning strength and distance from the detector.
For the strikes to be plotted on a map you have to pay (a lot) more
(~$500 as I recall) to get a Boltek detector (http://www.boltek.com/) so
for the price the Stormwise is an excellent choice.
