Bob, the best surface plot of NC that I know of is at:
http://twister.sbs.ohio-state.edu/gifs/SURFACE/sec/00LATEST.gif
It has some but not all of the ASOS stations; few free places have them
all, and it depends on which database people are using as to how many of
the recently commissioned ASOS they have. However, that one has KGEV
which gives me some hope, I think that was commissioned last year.
There is also this page, pick NC.
http://taiga.geog.niu.edu/machine/surface.html
It will also give you the ID's, not on the same chart. Disadvantage to
this image is that you can't link directly to it, you have to fill out
the form each time.
One of my main projects for this year for CASI is to create a map with
interactive observations for each state on the east coast, a map which
also incorporates links to AWS and amateur stations.
There are other surface plots of the region but those are the ones that
stick in my mind that are zoomed into NC. The ohio state one has
problems updating occasionally, I am sure they all do.
