DROUGHT/HEAT: Members Charlie Anzman and Greg Drollinger from PA both send some NWS information today - Greg details the drought and record highs across the state in a summary below... Charlie adds a note to remind PA residents that there is a Winter Weather Awareness Statement including average snowfalls at this URL: http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/pa/public.html CASI ARTICLE ON DROUGHT: I am planning to do an article on the CASI site about the Drought. If you have information on the drought from your personal observations, or links to pertinent articles on the Web please let me know ASAP - I plan to put the article up by Sunday evening. If you have sent me drought related information during the past few weeks I will add that as well. As far as the warm temperatures, don't expect them to extend far into next week, at least here in Central PA, where it's almost too hot to sleep at night with the windows open! I also gave in earlier this week and moved the houseplants outside. CRS IN PA: There is also a note at that URL explaining the conversion to the automated NOAA Weather Radio Computer Voice System, which has now taken over spoken voice here in Central PA. HURRICANE '99 FORECAST: Dr. Gray's new hurricane prediction for 1999 shows that he and his team expect another above normal year - about the same as this one was. A drought watch has been issued for all 67 counties of PA, and a drought warning has been posted for just over a dozen counties. They include: ..Bedford... Cambria... Cameron... Centre... Clarion... Clearfield... Clinton... Crawford... Erie... Franklin... Jefferson... Lycoming... Snyder.. In addition, several city's under the drought watch or warning have declared a drought EMERGENCY - the highest drought declaration possible. This calls for extensive conservation of water. Even restaurants are not allowed to serve water to the customers unless asked by the customer. Car washes in many areas have closed for the time being. A state-wide burning ban is also in effect. Numerous wild fires are burning across the state, most, but not all, in Luzerne county. Besides the extremely dry conditions, there has been record temperatures both yesterday and today (although temps have been above normal for weeks). 60's and 70's across central/eastern PA (not to mention surrounding states) resulted in nearly every "official" reporting station breaking record high temperatures. Some peak temperatures for today as of 3 pm EST: Harrisburg International Airport (MDT): 74 Williamsport-Lycoming County Airport (IPT): 68 Philadelphia International Airport (PHL): 73 Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport (ABE): 72 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP): 69 ...And with dew points well into the 50's at most locations, one might even say it feels a tad humid outside ;) Seriously though, if I hadn't looked at the calendar in a few months and didn't see Christmas decarations up, I would swear it was September/early October... See ya...
