Following are CASI Member reports on the severe weather in the Plains yesterday: Subject: 70mph winds in trenton Date: Sun, 04 Oct 1998 21:53:43 -0500 From: "Glen Briggs (wx)" <gbriggs{at}lyn.net> before i start let me tell you this was one of the the worse winds / flooding that i have seen in my 10 years of storm spotting at arround 7:30pm weather service issued a servere thunder storm warning for grundy county.. at 7:44pm the winds switched from the east to the south, and gusted to at least 70mph during the peak gust visb was about 500ft and the power poles i could see were swaying in either direction about 4 to 5 feet, (i thought for sure the one with the street light would go down, but it never did) then the the rain kicked in.. the winds kept gusting to 65mph with zero visb.. (at one point the wind and rains were so strong i noted that i could not see my rain gauge post wich is about 10ft from my back door.. the scarest part happend when the winds gusted to the strongest point.. at about 7:48pm winds gusted to arround 70mph again.. at wich point i could hear the wind roaring along the roof of our house.. and i could hear, and see the windows on the southside of the house shakeing.. shortly after the winds began to die down.. and the rain began to let up.. however, 25 miles south me the rain kept comeing.. and we had reports of cars floating in the high school parking lot at chillicothe.. wich i have never heard that as i write this MANY roads in northern missouri are closed.. and the rain and lighting keeps pounding us Glen Briggs ------------------------------------------------------------ = e-mail: gbriggs{at}lyn.net ICQ: 1133850 = = backup: wx{at}lyn.net AOL: kb0rpj = = Ham Radio Station: KB0RPJ = ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subject: SEVERE WEATHER/TORNADO 10/4/98 Date: Sun, 4 Oct 1998 22:27:09 -0500 From: "Joey Ketcham" <joek{at}apexcorp.com> Jesse, This is storm spotter Joey Ketcham of Pittsburg Kansas. At 8:30 me and the rest of the Skywarn spotters was activated for Crawford County. I headed South on 69 Highway until I got to a truck stop about 5 miles South of Pittsburg. At first there was just cloud to ground lightning and light wind. At 9:00 PM CDT I noticed that the wind became calm and everything just felt weird. Just then about 3 miles west of where me and 3 other spotters was, a tornado touched down on the ground. The tornado travled at a estimated speed of 30 MPH to the Northeast. The tornado was on the ground for exactly 10 minutes before going back up. At 9:15 heavy rain began to fall along with 60 MPH winds. Rain measurement at this time is exactly 2.49" just within the last 2 hours. Pea size hail was also reported by our Spotter in the west parts of Crawford County Kansas. More severe storms are to be expected with possible tornadoes so I will close now. Tomorrow I am going out to do a damage survey and take pictures, I will send you a copy of the report along with photos that was taken.
