1. Member Bryan Farr has proof that Tropical Storm Karl formed from the remnants of Hermine: "It was stated in the Tropial Cyclone Discussion last night that "Karl" may have formed from a low that was once possibly "TS Hermine". Today, I went back and plotted the data from Hermine from the NCEP Synoptic Charts and then tracked the remnant low from Louisiana on Sept 20 to the North Carolina coast on Sept 22. The low then tracked out to sea and began to deepen at 6Z on the 23. This was as far out as the synoptic chart plotted. Then at 21Z on the 23 the NHC classified TD 11 and 6 hours later named it Karl. You can see this plot and analysis at www.atms.unca.edu/~farr/98/karl.gif It is my opinion that Karl is just the rejuvinization of Hermine and actually should be classified as Hermine. " I note that the AccuWeather discussion also agrees with this: http://personal.accuweather.com/hurr98f/atlantic_qx01 -- 2. Here are the Member responses to Nick's question of "How Many Active Tropical Storms have there been in the Atlantic at one time since we have 4 today?": ============================ From: "Risnychok, Noel" A quick flip through The Tropical Cyclones of the North Atlantic HCS 6-2 will show that there have been many occurrences of at least four systems at one time since 1871. It's not unusual to find this during the most "memorable" seasons i.e. 26', 38' 69' etc ========================== From: (Bryan Farr) > Four tropical cyclones winds > 39 mph is a rare event in the N. Atlantic Ocean, but has occured in the following years.... 1995 Humberto, Iris, Jerry, Karen & TD 12 (Luis) Late Augusut. I do not have data readily available on this year. 1980- Danielle, Earl, Frances, Georges... Sept 6 1992 saw 5 Tropical cyclones at the same time.. TS Bonnie, H Charley, TS Danielle, TD# 6 (which became Earl), TD # 7 (remained TD)... Sept 26 1971 saw 5 Tropical cyclones and 4 named storms at the same time.. TS Edith, TS Fern, H Ginger, TS Heidi and TD 10 ( which became Irene) Sept 11. This is data for the past 30 years or so...
