Major severe weather came through PA, NJ, and NY (inlcuding Long
Island) today. Two main bathes were notable - one very early this morning
in NY state, and another this afternoon across PA, NJ, and Long Island. NWS
LSR's are still being sent...but early reports show many injuries and a few
deaths... not to mention a LOT of damage in many areas. Here are the most
notable reports:
-- Overnight derecho in upstate NY:
* 89 mph winds reported near Rochester - severe damage in the area.
* 80 mph gust recorded in Glen.
* 78 mph gust reported Fairfield.
* BGM and BUF storm surveys today puts local thunderstorm wind gusts up to
or above 110 mph. Onondaga county was hard hit with a microburst of F2
intensity. Path length was about 30 miles, and width was 6-7 miles.
* 2 dead, 7 injured, in Syacuse from severe thunderstorms winds at the
state fair. One death due to falling tree, and other from flying debris.
* Widespread wind damge across the state, dozens of reports.
-- PA, NJ, LI daytime Squall Line (derecho??):
* Lots of trees and power lines down across western PA, as a bow echo
formed in north central PA.
* Considerable damage at the Arts Festival in Harrisburg, PA - 4 injured.
At least $250K in damage. 67 mph thunderstorm wind gust recorded at MDT
airport.
* 1.75" hail 6 miles south of Muncy, PA, and 2.25" hail 2 miles south of
Mucny. (this size hail is quite unusual around here). Reflectivity data
showed DBZ's in excess of 65 at the time of the "hail fall".
* 67 mph gust recorded near Mechanicsburg, PA. Power out, trees down with
houses damaged, and roofs partially ripped off.
* Tamaqua, PA. Looks like microburst to me. Store brick wall colapsed
onto cars. Store sign bent. Windows blown out of houses. Portion of roofs
taken off houses. Trees down.
* Vietnam Veteran Memorial wall blown apart in Hazleton, PA. 1" square
steel rod supports bent. May be damaged beyond repair.
* 74 mph thunderstorm gust measured at AVP airport.
* 100 mph thunderstorm gust recorded in Chatham, NJ. We know that the
anemometer didn't "freak out", as it broke under the force of the wind
before it could measure antyhing higher.
* 75 mph thunderstorm gust recorded in Freehold, NJ
* Windows blwon out of several businesses and homes across NJ, with
injuries. People thrown out of boats. Boats/jet skis overturned at harbor.
* 1.75" hail at Union City, NJ. Trailer overturned by wind i Linden
* 80 mph gust recorded at Richmond, NY. Many trees down
* 1 dead from falling tree in Bronx, NY. 3 others injured.
* Building collpase in New York. Scaffold collapse.
* Tornado spotted in Bethpage, LI.
* Many other reports of wind damage/large hail. Numerous injuries across
LI and NJ, and NYC.
