There have been a number of interesting articles in the news lately due
to the hurricanes.

And finally, I hesitate to forward this without a hard reference, a
number of people heard about and have been asking about this article and
unfortunately the person who forwarded it to me can no longer recall
where they got it from, and a search of every news organization I could
find on the web concluded that the article doesn't exist. It mentions a
couple of controversial topics without any scientific elaboration,
including a snow squall and strange hurricane eye behaviour in Bonnie.
If any of you can find the original article please let me know.

Scientists fly into the eye of the storm
NASA scientists were flying scientific missions into
and over the hurricane as it hit the shore,
and initially reported that Bonnie appeared to be
birthing a second hurricane near its top. But a
return flight in a NASA ER-2 jet showed no signs of
a second hurricane.
"In Bonnie, the eye was not a cylinder as you would
expect," weather scientist Ed Zipser said.
Instead, he said it was doglegged, making it appear
that there were two eyes -- or two
hurricanes -- when in fact there was only one.
The team of NASA and other U.S. government
scientists flew into the hurricane to study
lightning and perhaps gather additional data on
several other anomalies, including why the
hurricane's eye has repeatedly failed to hold its
shape.
On one flight the eye appeared to "blink" at the
scientists as it disappeared and reappeared.
"Bonnie is like nothing we would expect," said
Zipser. On an earlier flight, one of the planes
actually ran into a snow storm inside the hurricane.
