Members: As I'm sure you're aware, the Galaxy IV Satellite ceased functioning last night at 6pm. Galaxy IV is a major communications satellite which spun out of control last night at 6pm. This resulted in a 90% loss to pager services in the United States, a considerable interruption to Cell Phone transmissions, the loss of broadcast of the National Public Radio and other stations, partial loss of broadcast for CBS, and a loss of all Radar and Satellite data and many text products to all major weather providers including UNISYS, WSI, The Weather Channel, AccuWeather, and any of the companies that they provide data to. As of this evening the satellite has still not been repaired but most companies have now put emergency plans into effect, attempting to use other satellites for their data. PanAm Communications, who own the Galaxy 4 satellite, are attempting to move Galaxy VI into Galaxy IV's place over the next 6 days. This has meant a return to a very small portion of pager services and other communications. The Weather Sector is still sufferering the worst. As of 8pm tonight, the status of the major weather providers web sites that I can check on is as follows: Personal AccuWeather - Has been able to transmit partial radar and satellite coverage and text data since last night. Intellicast - Has been able to transmit partial radar and satellite coverage and text data since last night. The Weather Channel - No Radar or Satellite data for last 24 hours, outage continues. American Weather Concepts - No Radar or Satellite data for last 24 hours, outage continues. More info on the outage can be found from CNN at this URL: http://www.cnn.com/TECH/space/9805/20/satellite.outage.2/ And the latest press releases from PanAmSat (most recent from 11:30am, detailing their plans to replace Galaxy IV with Galaxy VI) is at the following URL: http://www.panamsat.com/ctext.htm -- ============================================================== Jesse Ferrell - Meteorologist/Web Dev. - j{at}weatherwatchers.org Central Atlantic Storm Investigators - www.weatherwatchers.org "And here a twister comes... here comes the twister." --Talking Heads || ICQ No. 136862 ||
