Hi, this is the first time I have posted anything. I have been a member
for quite some time, but have not participated. That being because I
can not give much data wise as most of you can. Yet, although I can not
do that, maybe I can tell you what it was like on this past Monday being
in probably, the middle of a huge storm system. I do not know many
technical terms, as I am just interested in storms and have not learned
a great deal. The only learning I have done is being in the middle of
them..Being from Oklahoma, I have witnessed many tornadoes and storms.
However on Monday, I was out in and actually seen everything that was
happening in this storm.
About 6pm we (people I work with, military) were in a formation
discussing what we were gonna do (we were deployed) that day..we were
told to stage our gear quickly as bad weather was expected..then we were
told to look behind us..we could see the sky turning very dark, wind was
picking up, and it was drizzling. As we rushed to secure our work tents
the best we could, and get our gear in its place, it began raining, and
the clouds were alive. I remember looking up and seeing a huge cloud
amongst them all that seemed to be horizontally rolling rapidly, and
growing in size (I am guessing that is a roll cloud?). There was
constant lightning, downpours, the whole thing..then I noticed clouds
right above us swirling and I was trying to tell people, but in my
position, I had no choice but to stay out there and get everything
done. I seriously thought a funnel was going to drop right on us.
After we finished, we sat in the tents to see if it was going to end so
we could get to work. (Of course noone is allowed on the flight line in
that weather) Hours went by. It would hail, rain (with lightning
constant), hail then stop. It just kept going. Finally some of us
were allowed to leave. Back where we were sleeping, noone was asleep.
Tin roofs, the hail, downpours, cracks of thunder, there was noway.
Eventually our tin roof on one corner of the building began to be pulled
up...at first it was just a few inches, but each time it was a little
bit more...it was so loud when it would slam back down. I was waiting
for it to blow off. Even when the rain stopped you could go outside and
it was almost day time it seemed because of the lightning storm that
came with it.
Through the many years of living in tornado alley, and all them I have
been through, I have to say it was one of if not the worst I have seen
face to face. (when I was younger I was always made to go in the
basement, though I wanted to watch). This storm lasted from about 6:30
pm to at least 2am...8 hours at least!!
