From: J <j{at}weatherwatchers.org>
Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 06:45:52 -0400
There is a Moderate Risk of Severe Storms today in Northern GA and the
Westernmost counties of the Carolinas. A Slight Risk of Severe Storms
is in effect for the rest of the Southern CASI area excluding Florida.
For a maps of the SPC's official risks and other companies estimations
of the locations of severe weather see:
http://casi.simplenet.com/j/oldsite/wx/severe.html For a 30-minute
radar shot of the affected area including storm tops, forecast movement,
and watch boxes, see
http://www.intellicast.com/weather/mgm/radsum/
Severe Thunderstorms have already spread into Northern Alabama and
Southern Georgia.
The threat today will be Supercells with tornadoes. In fact as I look
at the Intellicast image at 6:30 this morning a TVS (Tornadic Vortex
Signature) has already been detected in Northern Alabama.
Please be aware that severe weather could affect you if you live in
these areas today. And remember, if you witness strong weather, fill
out the StormForm at http://www.weatherwatchers.org/stormform/
Here are the specifics from the SPC:
...SOUTHEASTERN STATES...
SOUTHERLY/SOUTHWESTERLY LOW-LEVEL WINDS WILL INCREASE OVERNIGHT
ALLOWING DEWPOINTS IN THE UPPER 60S TO SPREAD INTO THE SOUTHEASTERN
STATES. THIS INCREASING MOISTURE AND DAYTIME HEATING SHOULD RESULT
IN AIRMASS OVER THIS REGION BECOMING MODERATELY UNSTABLE BY MID-
AFTERNOON. BELIEVE CURRENT THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD INTENSIFY AS THEY
MOVE INTO THIS UNSTABLE AIRMASS ACROSS GEORGIA...SOUTH CAROLINA AND
SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF NORTH CAROLINA. LATEST MODELS SUGGEST
VERTICAL WIND PROFILES OVER THIS REGION WILL SUPPORT SEVERE
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF SUPERCELLS AND A
FEW TORNADOES.
BEHIND THIS INITIAL AREA OF THUNDERSTORMS...AIRMASS IS EXPECTED TO
ONCE AGAIN DESTABILIZE. TEMPERATURES IN THE 80S AND DEWPOINTS
APPROACHING 70 DEGF SHOULD RESULT IN MODERATELY/VERY UNSTABLE
AIRMASS FROM ALABAMA AND MIDDLE TENNESSEE INTO GEORGIA. IN
ADDITION...MODELS INDICATE MID-LEVEL DRY INTRUSION WILL MOVE ACROSS
REGION. ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP ALONG
SOUTHEASTWARD MOVING COLD FRONT AND ANY OUTFLOW BOUNDARY FROM
MORNING THUNDERSTORMS.
WESTERLY/NORTHWESTERLY MID-LEVEL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE TO
80 KT OVER THIS AREA. THESE STRONG WINDS...COMBINED WITH
SOUTHERLY/ SOUTHWESTERLY LOW-LEVEL WINDS AND INSTABILITY...SHOULD
RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUPERCELLS AND TORNADOES.
