At 6pm there were 44 people confirmed dead with this latest outbreak of
severe weather in the Southeast US. According to the Weather Channel
This brings the total for this year to 106 which makes 1998, already,
and it's only April 9, the third deadliest tornado season for the US
since records have been kept (~1948). The only years that surpass this
year (so far) are 1984 with 123 deaths and 1974 with 360. Of course
tornado fatalities don't neccessarily correspond to the severity of the
storms, but it is an indicator of it, especially with Tornado Warning
systems being more advanced now then they were in '84 and much more than
'74.
