An "interesting" day in the Carolinas. I was sitting at WKDK radio,
bored, during the CD program I was playing so I listened to GSP on
the ham HT. GSP serves west of us and CAE does Newberry county...
I had been watching clouds outside get darker by the minute and the
lower scud were all racing in various directions, often toward each
other. I heard the duck quacks, so I knew a warning was going off.
It was a tornado touchdown in Laurens SC some 30 miles up US 76! This
was FIRST reported by Spotters. Now my 3PM relief doesn't show up
till nearly 3:25, so I can't go after that, so I decide that I will
go and sit at SC 391 2 miles east of Prosperity SC which is the
second highest spot in the county and can hit any ham repeater for
100 miles. The Charlotte 145.350 Skywarn is going in directed mode
with a doppler indicated tornado between Dallas [ that's NC ya'll]
and Gastonia. [Larry Wright should have stayed close to home....<evil
grin> and maybe he wouldn't have busted!] I watched all kinds of scud
go everywhich way and a lowering that most likely was scud (have this
on video) . I turn around and look behind me and see scud from 2
different directions flying toward a cigar shaped cloud hanging down
and the scud goes into the bottom of it FFTTT! like a vacuum. The
middle looked bleary like those Denver high based ropy landspouts
but the outside was not, and could not see any real rotation (unless
the middle was ..ah er...) I'm standing there looking at this camera
in my hand ( all the time reporting to the CAE Skywarn W4USC ) and
thinking OH #$%&! I decide to see what happens and IF it comes down
report it and bail out fast ( I can go 3 directions) because it would
touch down basically VERY close. It then fuzzed out .....
Trip back to CAE was getting reports and chasing the strongest
convection that decided I was not going to get to it before it
fizzed. Right before I left temps dropped well over 10 degrees, from
75 to most likely around 60 ( had to put on leather jacket to keep
warm!)

WHEW!
