Subject: 7/5 Calhoun County SC chase and lightning shots tonight
Reply-to: powell{at}scsn.net
Priority: normal
Well Saturday afternoon I noticed a big CB going up to the SE of
me. It wasn't too long before there was a warning for this series of
storms so I headed out toward it. Down SC 48 toward Gadsden and St.
Matthews. I stopped just past Gadsden to watch the SW corner of one
of these cells (warnings were issued ....golf ball size hail
reported) and it looked like the storm was trying to make a wall
cloud, but it never rotated and finally dissipated. Down to US 601
and I decided that I'd go as far as Lone Star and cross the lake. I
stopped off about 5 miles out on a small paved road facing the two
systems (sorta a notch between the 2) and watched the rain shaft and
could hear thunder boom and echo continuously. There was a light
green tint, and I could tell NO cloud patterns due to the rain shaft.
I made it ahead of that to Lone Star where I then found out that
there IS NO way over the lake. I did get into some VERY strong (
lucky they were head on at that time I was stationary) winds, and
the wind did knock down a barn and peel a roof off another structure
near where I was. .I went back to US 601 and crossed the
lake...caught I-95, but the storm moved away toward areas I was not
familiar with and roads that way I didn't know about. I headed up 95
and caught US 521 to Sumter to US 76 and home. I heard of the doppler
reported tornado near Dillon, but I was 80 miles from it.
250 miles
That night WIS TV had video of the hail, with someone' s dog catching
the large hailstones in his mouth and EATING them. Puppy was having a
feast. It must not have hurt that bad as he was just outside his
house!
Tonight a friend called me and said "BLAM-A-LAM-A-LAM! I then heard
the EAS tones on the weather radio....(using the ham HT) and it was
a severe storm south of me. I went over to Jays' and set up the
camera on tripod....ran of a 24 roll of Velvia.....we'll see what
lightning shots came out. It was nearly dark. We then followed the
storm SE All of GASTON SC had no power. Lightning got ( we saw the
whole sky go whitsish blue on that striike) some transformers.
