Anyway, the big news (unless I'm the clueless one here and everybody
else knows) is that there is a site now offering 5-minute updates of
Lightning Strikes in the Northern CASI region, within 200 miles of
Laurel Maryland. WeatherNode INC is providing the data as part of their
EMWIN-related project. They say:
"9/2/97 : We're testing a new lightning detection device on this server.
If tests are positive, we will establish a national network
of lightning detectors and make the resultant data freely
available via this server."
The URL is: http://www.weathernode.com/lightng/
Your first thought may be mine, which was "Uh-oh, wait until the people
who run the lightning network catches them, they'll kill the website
like all the others." In fact however I get the feeling these people
are not using the National Network but are in fact using individual
nodes similar to the one that is sold commercially for about $400.
Speaking of Lightning, Powell Way now has his lightning pix from a storm
this summer in SC on his home page

Aftern waiting 23 years for an electronic weather station, I finally got
my RadioShack station installed today here at HeadQuarters! I'll have
video captures of how I did it (with minimal alterations to tee off the
landlord) up on the CASI homesite soon. Should be fun.
Severe weather season in Central PA apparently ends when September
begins... We've had nothing severe for over a month. The Plains appear
to be having their "indian severe season" as last night's Radar Summary
showed no less than 5 tornado watches spanning an area from Texas to
North Dakota...
