On the lofty ice cap of East Antarctica, the temperature plummeted
to -122 degrees at Russia's Vostok base Sunday night. This reading was
about 20 degrees below average.

Meantime, fierce winds battered some coastal sections of East
Antarctica from Sunday afternoon to early Monday, local time. At
Mawson, an Australian outpost, sustained winds blew 75-80 mph, or
hurricane-strength, for at least twelve hours as temperatures hovered
between 5 and 10 degrees above zero.

Sunday, fiery heat burned many parts of central and southern
Spain. Many locations reached 100-105 degrees, but there were even
hotter spots. Cordoba, for example, soared to 113 degrees, a mark
that was 17 degrees above average. Caceres spiked to 109 degrees.

Very heavy rain flooded a small part of southern South Korea
Sunday to Monday. In Masan, 24-hour rainfall as of late Monday, local
time, was 9.0 inches.
