Late Thursday morning, EDT, the core of Typhoon Matsa is passing
over the Sakishima Shoto of Japan's southern Ryukyu Islands as the
storm makes its way from the Philippine Sea to the East China Sea.
Matsa is centered about 40 miles to the north of Ishigaki Shima,
Japan, and 180 miles east of Taipei, Taiwan. Moving towards the
north-northwest at 8 mph, the storm has highest sustained winds of 105
mph. Matsa will continue to rip the southern Ryukyu Islands and
northern Taiwan for another 12-24 hours as it heads slowly towards the
northwest. By late Friday, the typhoon will threaten eastern mainland
China, probably to the south of Shanghai.
