Late Tuesday morning, EDT, Typhoon Matsa is over the western
Philippine Sea. Centered about 475 miles south of Naha, Okinawa,
Japan, and 565 miles southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, Matsa has highest
sustained winds of 80 mph; it is moving northwestward at 14 mph. Matsa
is forecast to move towards the north-northwest and to strengthen
markedly, thereby becoming a powerful typhoon, during the next 48-72
hours. By late Wednesday night and Thursday, the storm could threaten
Taiwan and Japan's southern Ryukyu Islands as it moves towards the
East China Sea.
