downpours and mudslides for the next 2-3 days over portions of
southwest China and northernmost Vietnam.
A tropical depression located near Yap Saturday morning, EDT,
is becoming better organized and is likely to develop into a
Tropical Storm in the next 24-36 hours. By early next week this
storm is likely to reach Typhoon intensity as it moves northwest
over the western Pacific Ocean, to the northeast of the Philippines.
Ultimately, this storm is forecast to head toward Korea or southern
Japan later next week.
Unusually hot weather over western Europe early this week has
shifted south and east and is centered over Bulgaria Saturday.
Nearby countries are also quite hot Saturday with Beograd, Yugoslavia
topping 90 for the fourth consecutive day. Hot weather will continue
into Monday before a cold frontal passage triggers a few welcome
thunderstorms followed by several days of cooler weather with highs
in the 70s and lower 80s. The normal high temperature this time of
the year over much of southeast Europe is in the low to middle 80s.
Gusty thunderstorms signaled the end of the heat wave across southern
Germany late Friday. Stuttgart had a wind gust to 40 mph along with
a heavy downpour.
Hot weather has spread into the Ukraine as well over the past
few days with the current spell of hot weather likely to peak this
weekend. High temperatures both Saturday and Sunday will be in the
low to middle 90s over most of the Ukraine making this the hottest
stretch of weather so far this summer. The normal high in Kiev this
time of the year is 74 degrees. Todays high in the middle 90s will
be some 20 degrees above normal.
Heavy rainfall associated with the summer monsoon has swamped
