        World Weather Summary
Updated: July 29, 2005 10:42 a.m.
Late Friday morning, EDT, a new, un-named tropical storm is
spinning over the South China Sea near China's Hainan Island. The
storm has top sustained winds of 40 mph about a center which is 125
miles southeast of Haikou, Hainan Island, China; it is drifting
westward at 5 mph. The cyclone is forecast to move slowly across
Hainan Island and then to emerge over the Gulf of Tonkin by late
Saturday morning or Saturday afternoon; thereafter, it may head for
northern Vietnam. The cyclone is likely to remain a minimal tropical
storm or weaken to a tropical depression during this time.

Locally heavy rain hit western portions of Luzon Island, northern
Philippines, the second half of this week. At Iba, rainfall was 7.6
inches from Wednesday to Friday, local time.

Much of central and western Europe withstood unusually hot weather
Thursday. In France, for example, Clermont-Ferrand soared to 98
degrees whereas an average late July day would have a high of 79.
Other French hot spots included Lyon, Gourdon and Montelimar, each of
which registered a high of 96 degrees. Germany had 95-degree highs at
Wurzburg, Bamberg and Nurnberg. Wroclaw, Poland, spiked 21 degrees
above average to also reach 95. Switzerland was led by Geneva which
topped out at 97 degrees while Linz was hottest in Austria with its
high of 95. Heat of this magnitude was also felt in Czech Republic,
Slovakia and Hungary as well as across much of southern Europe.

The Libyan capital, Tripoli, was considerably hotter than usual
Tuesday through Thursday when consecutive highs of 114, 111 and 113
degrees were set. The mean daily high here during July is 95 degrees.
