Monday brought record-setting heat to eastern Canada from many
parts of Ontario to southern and western Quebec. Toronto, Ontario, the
nation's largest city, soared to 96 degrees; this was a record for the
date and 17 degrees above average. Also registering records were

degrees, La Grande Riviere at 97 and Angliers at 96. In Ontario,
Moosonee, Kapuskasing and Petawawa each recorded 97 degrees while
Timmins and Lansdowne House rose to 96.
A cold, soaking rain doused the Alps of far southern Germany from
Sunday to Tuesday. At Wendelstein, rainfall was 5.4 inches with
temperatures in the 40s. On the nation's highest mountain, Zugspitze,
rain and wet snow left a liquid equivalent of 3.4 inches; the
temperature varied between 30 and 35 degrees.
Tropical Storm Haitang is plying the western North Pacific Ocean.
Late Tuesday morning, EDT, Haitang holds highest sustained winds of 40
mph about a center which is 550 miles east of Iwo Jima, one of Japan's
Volcano Islands; it is moving westward at 7 mph. Haitang is forecast
to slowly strengthen during the next 2-3 days while following a path
towards the southwest and west. On this course, the cyclone would pass
