"June 30, 2005
Meteorologist Jeff Johnson was in the middle of the forecast Wednesday
when he got a shock from the very storm he was trying to warn us about.

A bolt from the blue that struck the National Weather Service office north
of Des Moines about 10:30 a.m. knocked out equipment and sent Johnson to
the hospital.

The incident proved that lightning can indeed strike twice.

It was the second time in three years the weather service office has been
hit. It was the first time anyone got hurt.

...

"It felt like a physical force, kind of intense, and seemed to be focused
on one side of me," he said. "It was a ball of light, and I started
feeling weird after that. In lightning safety, we tell people not to be by
a window. There had been a couple rumbles of thunder - then bam! out of
the blue."

Johnson took the rest of the day off.

...

"Lightning does hit twice, and we definitely are not immune to it," said
Brenda Brock, the meteorologist in charge of the weather service
office. "We feel like it was a direct hit, but the fire department
determined it probably hit the ground and might have followed a cable to
the building. There were no signs of it hitting the rooftop or anything.

The strike disabled computers used in forecasts. The forecast crew was
able to acquire replacement parts and get the Doppler radar working later
in the day.
