World Weather Summary
Updated: June 9, 2005 12:02 a.m.
Nesat is a weakening tropical storm skirting Japan to its south.
Late Thursday morning, EDT, Tropical Storm Nesat is centered 430 miles
to the south-southwest of Tokyo. With highest sustained winds of 50
mph, the storm is moving northeastward at 13 mph. Nesat is forecast to
weaken further on a northeastward heading during the next 24-36 hours.
On this path, Nesat's core will pass to the south and east of
"mainland" Japan, although some of its outer rain bands and gusty
winds could reach southeastern Honshu Island.
Flooding rains have swamped India's Andaman Islands this week. For
example, from midday Monday to late Thursday, local time, rainfall was
13.8 inches at Port Blair on South Andaman Island.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday brought sweltering heat to Lisbon,
Portugal's capital. Consecutive highs of 94, 96 and 94 degrees were
registered on these three days whereas the average daily high during
the first week of June is in the lower 70s.
Over the high Alps, meantime, recent days have been cold and
snowy. Atop Sonnblick Mountain, Austria, for example, 24 inches of
snow fell in the 72 hours ended early Thursday afternoon, local time;
this lifted the snow depth to 116 inches. Fresh snowfall on Germany's
high point, Zugspitze, raised the snow pack to 122 inches or a little
more than ten feet!
Hurricane-strength winds battered Australia's Casey base in East
Antarctica Wednesday night and Thursday, local time. Sustained winds
blew 55-80 mph for more than twelve hours with temperatures in the
10s. Snow was blown into blinding sheets.
Wednesday was unusually warm, even somewhat hot, in western Canada
from northern Alberta and northern Saskatchewan to some adjacent lands
of the Northwest Territories. In Alberta, Garden River and Fort
Chipewyan set respective highs of 86 and 82 degrees. Fort Smith, NWT,
spiked to 85 degrees. Stony Rapids, SK, reached 83 degrees while
Uranium City, SK, topped out at 80. Each of these marks was 15-20
degrees above average.
Heavy rain doused the Cayman Islands of the western Caribbean Sea
as a strong tropical wave grew into a tropical depression Wednesday
evening and then into Tropical Storm Arlene Thursday morning. On the
island of Grand Cayman, for example, rainfall was about 5.5 inches
within a little more than 24 hours as of Thursday morning at the Owen
Roberts international airport near George Town, the capital.
