World Weather Summary
Updated: June 7, 2005 12:09 a.m.
Typhoon Nesat continues to ply the waters of the northern
Philippine Sea. Late Tuesday morning, EDT, Nesat holds top sustained
winds of 105 mph about a center which is 470 miles west of Iwo Jima,
one of Japan's Volcano Islands; it is drifting north-northwestward at
5 mph. Nesat is forecast to slowly weaken and to turn northeastward
during the next 2-3 days. On this projected path, Nesat's core would
pass between the Volcano Islands and "mainland" Japan later Thursday
and Thursday night, although some of the cyclone's strong winds and
heavy rains could lash southeastern Honshu Island, including Tokyo.
Excessive, flooding rains swamped southwestern Alberta, Canada,
from Sunday evening to early Tuesday morning. Hardest hit was the town
of Pincher Creek where 9.1 inches of rain fell within 36 hours; this
was about 2.5 times the average rainfall for all of June. Claresholm
also got soaked; here, rainfall was 6.8 inches during the same
interval.
Meantime, Monday was unusually hot in parts of eastern Canada,
including some of nation's biggest cities. Toronto, Ontario, for
example, registered 88 degrees at its Pearson international airport;
this mark was 16 degrees above average and only 1 degree shy of the
record for the date. Ottawa, Ontario, the national capital, was nearly
as warm with an 86-degree top mark. In Montreal, Quebec, a new record
high for June 6th was established when the temperature peaked at 87
degrees.
Late Monday and Monday night, local time, cloudbursts broke over
parts of Malaysia's state of Sabah on the island of Borneo. At Kota,
rainfall was about 11.4 inches within 12 hours.
Portions of far southeastern China have also been inundated by
torrential rainfall in recent days. In the province of Guangxi and
near the Gulf of Tonkin, for instance, the city of Qinzhou was
drenched by 10.4 inches of rain within about 36 hours ended Tuesday
morning, local time.
Consecutive highs of 107, 106 and 105 degrees were registered
Saturday through Monday in Villahermosa, southeastern Mexico. To put
this heat in perspective, the average daily high during June is 87
degrees here. Mexico City has also sweltered lately. Monday was the
third straight day to notch 90 degrees whereas the mean daily high in
this part of June is 76.
Monday, 105-degree heat was broken by a sudden thunderstorm that
unleashed almost 4.3 inches of rain at Goure, southern Niger.
Eastern sections of the Caribbean Sea have been unsettled by a
tropical wave lately. On Dominica, one of the Leeward Islands, for
example, rainfall was 7.2 inches within 72 hours as of Tuesday morning
at the Melville Hall airport.
