World Weather Summary
Updated: June 6, 2005 11:50 a.m.
Typhoon Nesat is a strong storm plying the waters of the northern
Philippine Sea. Late Monday morning, EDT, Nesat holds top sustained
winds of 130 mph about an eye which is 490 miles west-southwest of Iwo
Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands; it is moving northeastward at 10
mph. Nesat is forecast to remain a powerful and dangerous storm as it
heads more-or-less towards the north-northeast during the next 2 days;
thereafter, meaningful weakening and an accelerated motion towards the
northeast are anticipated. On this projected path, Nesat would pass
between the Volcano Islands and "mainland" Japan Wednesday night and
early Thursday, although it is too soon to rule out a direct hit in
either area.
Monday, fiery heat burned most of Pakistan. Highest temperatures
were generally registered in the southeast. Here, Jacobabad and Pad
Idan each soared to 120 degrees while Rohri and Nawabshah both hit
118. Farther to the northwest, a high of 119 degrees was set at Sibi.
Southern Spain and much of Portugal were unusually hot Sunday. For
example, Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, hit 93 degrees whereas the
average daily high during June is 75. The temperature was back to 93
degrees by midafternoon Monday. Other hot spots in Portugal Sunday
were Evora and Castelo Branco with highs of 99 and 96 degrees,
respectively. Leading the way in Spain on Sunday was Cordoba where the
101-degree high was about 15 degrees above average.
Excessive rainfall swamped parts of western Luzon Island,
Philippines, during the past weekend. Rainfall was 10.7 inches within
48 hours as of Monday morning, local time, at Iba. During the same
interval, Manila was doused by 10.1 inches of rain.
Recent rains have been heavy on Japan's Bonin Islands. On Chichi
Jima, 8.8 inches of rain fell within 48 hours ended Monday evening,
local time.
