        World Weather Summary
Updated: May 11, 2005 10:13 a.m.
Downpours pelted parts of French Polynesia in the South Pacific
Ocean this week. On Hiva Oa, one of the Marquesas Islands, rainfall
was 6.1 inches within 24 hours from late Monday to late Tuesday, local
time, at Atuona. The island of Takaroa collected about 5.4 inches of
rain within 72 hours ended late Tuesday.

Vast and varied, Canada has wide-ranging weather. Tuesday, for
example, saw summery warmth in parts of the west and southeast while
some central areas felt more like winter. In the northwest's Yukon
Territory, Dawson spiked to the middle 70s for a third consecutive
day. These highs would be near average in July, but they were about 20
degrees above average for the first third of May. A wintry chill,
meantime, gripped northern Manitoba. Gillam and Thompson set
respective highs of 23 and 28 degrees which were 25 or more degrees
below average. In southeastern Ontario and southern Quebec, on the
other hand, Tuesday's afternoon temperatures were well into the 70s
and, in many places, in the lower 80s. The national capital, Ottawa,
Ontario, made its first foray into the 80s since September; the
84-degree high was more than 20 degrees above average and only 4
degrees short of the record high for the date. Montreal, Quebec,
reached 81 degrees.

Forty-eight hour rainfall ended Wednesday morning was about 4.8
inches at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This soaking rainfall
was about 70% of the average rainfall for all of May.

It's been even hotter than usual the last couple of days within
the deserts of Algeria. At Hassi Messaoud, Tuesday's 111-degree high
was nearly 20 degrees above average, and Wednesday was shaping up to
be just as hot. Also Tuesday, a high of 112 degrees was set at In
Salah with this mark being more than 10 degrees above average. Here,
the temperature was back to 110 degrees by early Wednesday afternoon.

This week has been unusually rainy in parts of Queensland,
Australia. On the Coral Sea coast, for example, rainfall from Sunday
to Wednesday was 5.7 inches at Mackay. This is more rain than would
fall, on average, during all of May; the monthly mean is 4.6 inches.

Japan's Minami Daito Jima in the northern Philippine Sea has had
more than its share of rain this week as well. Rainfall here was about
4.7 inches within 84 hours as of Wednesday evening, local time.
