World Weather Summary
Updated: May 9, 2005 9:46 a.m.
Sunday, a good deal of northwestern Canada's Yukon Territory
basked in summerlike warmth. Dawson, for example, reached 75 degrees,
or about 20 degrees above average. At Whitehorse, the province's
capital and its largest city, the 71-degree high was only 3 degrees
short of the record high for the date.
In far southeastern Canada, meanwhile, a weekend storm brought
excessive rainfall to parts of Nova Scotia. Greater Halifax, the
provincial capital, was doused by 2.7-3.7 inches of rain within 48
hours ended Monday morning; this accounted for a sizeable portion of
May's 4.3-inch average rainfall. At Western Head, 4.5 inches of rain
fell, largely within 24 hours from Saturday morning to Sunday morning.
Heavy rain pounded a small part of far southern Brazil Sunday and
Sunday night. In the state of Santa Catarina, the eastern city of
Florianopolis was soaked by about 5.2 inches of rain within 24 hours
as of Monday morning. This drenching left more rain than would fall,
on average, during all of May here; the monthly mean is 4.2 inches.
Recent days have been quite rainy on Thailand's Phuket Island
which lies off the Malay Peninsula. Rainfall was about 6.2 inches
within 54 hours as of Monday evening, local time.
Monday, New Zealand's Stewart Island was buffeted by strong winds.
At South West Cape, sustained winds increased from 40 mph to 60 mph
during the course of the day.
Southeastern China lately has had more than its share of thundery
downpours. On Sunday, for example, Tongdao, Hunan Province, was doused
by 4.7 inches of rain, and Luodian, Guizhou Province, was washed by
3.2 inches of rain. Rainfall was even heavier to the east in the
province of Guangdong. Here, 6.3 inches of rain fell on Xinyi while
Guangzhou gathered in about 5.4 inches of rain; both of these tallies
were measured within 36 hours ended Monday afternoon, local time.
