Heavy thunderstorms struck many parts of southeastern China
Wednesday to Thursday. In the province of Hunan, for example, rainfall
was almost 4.5 inches at Changsha in a little more than 24 hours.
Islands, and locally heavy rains hit these islands in the eastern Bay
of Bengal Thursday. At Port Blair on South Andaman Island, rainfall
was 3.1 inches within less than six hours. The average rainfall in
Port Blair jumps from 2.6 inches in April to 15.0 inches in May.
Thursday brought no relief from the the heat. On China's Hainan
Island, for example, Haikou peaked near 100 degrees for a third
straight day Thursday whereas the average daily high during the first
week of May is about 87. On the shores of the South China Sea,
meantime, Da Nang, Vietnam, spiked to 103 degrees Thursday with this
mark being almost 15 degrees above average. Moreover, it felt as hot
as 115 degrees when taking into account all facets of the weather.
Thursday. In the United Arab Emirates, for example, Abu Dhabi, Dubai
and Sharjah each flirted with 110 degrees. These temperatures were
almost 15 degrees above average for early May.
