Towards the end of this chase Amos Magliocco, Jon Garner, his chase partner
and I got blasted by some intense vortex while standing next to our
vehicles. It made the day even after the cool structure with this storm.
We were just north of the storm on the NE side of border standing in strong
very cold north winds. The storm we were chasing was right on the surface
low(we believe). The new updrafts and circulations would form just to the
ene of the old ones...perhaps more east. Well the first time it did it a
weak updraft and rfd cut formed directly east of what nearly tornadoed to
our west, but it did not survive. Instead a new base rapidly formed north
of the occluding one and was very deep/low and this survived. Ok, back to
the end on the border. The storm was ssw of us with this new circulation
just to its east, attached to the rest of this big storm. The winds were
strong north and cold and one would have never believed they'd stop and turn
south, but they did as we stood there looking at the now disorganized area
that was previously rotating north towards us. It went from that stiff
north wind to light south to nothing in a matter of seconds(20?). At the
same time as it let up Amos yelled what the hell is that point just yards to
our sw in the field(40 yards?). The crops were all being smashed own as
this intense vortex of some kind quickly moved ne right at us. We only had
time to notice it was there before very intense winds overtook us. My car
door was still open during this and the car was facking east. I was only a
couple feet from my car and couldn't even get in the door. Gravel quickly
beat the crap out of the right side of my face as I grabbed the door and
tried to get my head more into the car. It was all banking off me and the
door and flying into the car. I remember feeling a bit light as it hit and
ramped up so fast. It was a bit exciting as there was no time for fear as
it was happening. One just grabs ahold of something and hangs on. Amos
only had time to drop down and grab his truck while shielding his face. I'm
not sure what Jon and his partner did but I imagine they dove infront of his
car which was right behind mine. This only lasted up to 10 seconds and it
was gone, back to calm. What was it, I have no idea, but it was easily the
most intense winds I've ever been in. The noise and feel made me think of
being inside the dillo cam, lol.
