MEDIA STORY:
"Winds ripping through central Florida Thursday afternoon flipped planes
and trucks, damaged buildings, snarled traffic and left a trail of
electrical blackouts and downed trees. The severe storms may have also left
a Central Florida woman dead Thursday.
The cold front moved through Southwest Florida on Thursday night,
necessitating weather watches and warnings of high winds, dangerous
lightning and hail. Residents of Sarasota, Charlotte and DeSoto counties
experienced a lightning show, gusty winds and nearly an inch of rain. "It
was very unusual for April," said WINK-TV Chief Meteorologist Jim Farrell.
In Marion County, officials reported that the storm had damaged at least 20
homes, some severely, and left more than 6,000 customers without power. At
least four people, including a pregnant teen riding a school bus, were
injured, officials said. A National Weather Service spokesman told The
Associated Press that reports of a tornado were unconfirmed but are being
investigated.
A 100-foot section of Pensacola's landmark red clay bluffs was washed away
as seven inches of rain fell over a 24-hour period. Part of Scenic Highway,
overlooking Escambia Bay atop the bluffs, will be closed for several weeks
while repairs are made, police said."
