April 6, 2005 11:47 a.m.

Stormy weather beset Canada's Vancouver Island in southwestern
British Columbia Tuesday to Wednesday. Indeed, the island was ripped
by high winds locally reaching hurricane strength and soaked by heavy
rain. As of early Wednesday morning, local time, rainfall was 3.8
inches within 36 hours at Estevan Point and 2.9 inches within 30 hours
at Port Alberni. Early Tuesday, tiny Solander Island off the
northwestern corner of Vancouver Island was lashed by sustained winds
that peaked near 75 mph and gusts that exceeded 95 mph at their
highest.

Tuesday saw high heat build over portions of northeastern Mexico.
In the state of Nuevo Leon, for example, Monterrey soared to 101
degrees; this mark was a full 20 degrees above average for the date.

Seventy-two hour rainfall ended Wednesday morning was 7.8 inches
at Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock, French Guiana. April lies at the heart
of the rainy season in this part of northern South America. In
Saint-Georges, for instance, April's average rainfall is 16.9 inches.

Strong, icy winds lashed Kroyers Holme in far northeastern
Greenland Tuesday to Wednesday. With temperatures hovering between -18
and -10 degrees, sustained winds blew 40-50 mph for more than 30
hours as of midday Wednesday. The wind chill temperature was as low
as -55 degrees.

Typically moderated by breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, Agadir,
Morocco, has an average daily high of 77 degrees during April. On
Wednesday, however, winds blowing offshore boosted the temperature to
98 degrees by early afternoon.

Strong, dust-laden winds blasted parts of southwestern Pakistan
Tuesday night and Wednesday. At Nok Kundi, for example, sustained
winds blew 40-60 mph for more than twelve hours as of late afternoon
Wednesday, local time. The high winds whipped sand through the air
thereby cutting the visibility to about 0.3 of a mile.

Calendars may show it to be spring in the northern hemisphere, but
northwestern Russia has been decidedly winterlike during recent days.
In Berezovo, for example, the temperature dipped to -21 degrees early
Tuesday and -23 degrees Wednesday morning; these marks were more than
35 degrees below average. Vorkuta was about 25 degrees below average
in setting respective lows of -22 and -21 degrees on these two
mornings. Salekhard plummeted to -19 degrees Tuesday and -24 Wednesday
whereas the mean daily low in April is 5.

Tropical Cyclone Isang is plying wide open waters of the western
South Indian Ocean. Early Wednesday morning, EDT, Isang had highest
sustained winds of nearly 65 mph about a center which was 450 miles
southeast of Rodrigues Island, Mauritius; it was moving
south-southeastward at 20 mph. Isang was forecast to move towards the
south-southeast and to begin to weaken over open seas during the next
2-3 days.

Over the central South Indian Ocean, meantime, Tropical Cyclone
Adeline-Juliet is a powerful storm. Early Wednesday morning, EDT,
Adeline-Juliet wielded top sustained winds of 130 mph about an eye
which was 665 miles to the west of Australia's remote Cocos, or
Keeling, Islands. The storm was moving westward at 10 mph.
Adeline-Juliet was forecast to strengthen further on an open-water
heading towards the west-southwest during the next two days.

Unusually heavy April rains swamped parts of southern India Monday
to Tuesday. In the southeast and on the shores of the Bay of Bengal,
rainfall was 6.0 inches at Chennai (Madras). The average rainfall here
during all of April is only about 1.0 inch, so this dousing brought
six times the monthly mean.
