April 5, 2005 10:43 a.m.

Tropical Cyclone Isang is plying mostly open waters of the western
South Indian Ocean. Early Tuesday morning, EDT, Isang had highest
sustained winds of 40 mph about a center which was 150 miles east of
Rodrigues Island, Mauritius; it was moving southwestward at 9 mph.
Isang was forecast to move towards the south and southeast while
slowly weakening over open seas during the next 2-3 days.

Over the central South Indian Ocean, meantime, Tropical Cyclone
Adeline is strengthening. Early Tuesday morning, EDT, Adeline wielded
top sustained winds of 75 mph about an eye which was 435 miles to the
west-southwest of Australia's remote Cocos, or Keeling, Islands. The
storm was moving westward at 10 mph. Adeline was forecast to
strengthen further on an open-water heading towards the west-southwest
during the next two days.

Calendars may show it to be spring in the northern hemisphere, but
northwestern Russia was decidedly winterlike Tuesday morning. In
Berezovo, for example, the temperature dipped to -21 degrees, a mark
that was about 35 degrees below average. Vorkuta and Salekhard were
both about 25 degrees below average in setting respective lows of -22
and -19 degrees.

Unusually heavy April rains swamped parts of southern India Monday
to Tuesday. In the southeast and on the shores of the Bay of Bengal,
rainfall was 5.9 inches at Chennai (Madras). The average rainfall here
during all of April is only about 1.0 inch, so this dousing brought
almost six times the monthly mean. The far southern city of
Trivandrum, meanwhile, was hit by about 5.4 inches of rain; this
exceeded the monthly average by 0.9 of an inch.
