Parts of southeastern Ontario, Canada, were buried by a spring
snow storm over the weekend. At the western tip of Lake Ontario, for
example, 13 inches of heavy, wet snow fell on the city of Hamilton.
Snow depth as of Monday morning was 8 inches. The storm's output was
2.0 inches when measured as liquid. For perspective, April's average
snowfall here is only 3.4 inches, and the mean precipitation for the
month is about 2.5 inches.
Greater La Habana (Havana), Cuba, dawned rather chilly Monday
morning. At the Jose Marti international airport south of the city's
center, the temperature dipped to 50 degrees whereas the average daily
low during April is 70.
Some residents of eastern Argentina's Buenos Aires province awoke
to frosty, winterlike cold on Monday. Take the town of Tandil where
the temperature dipped to 33 degrees. Not only was this mark 15
degrees below the average daily low during April, but it was also 3
degrees below the mean daily low in July which lies at the heart of
the Southern winter. Nearby, Azul set a low of 34 degrees. Even along
some stretches of the province's relatively balmy Atlantic coast, it
was cold; Mar del Plata fell to 37 degrees.
Sunday to Monday saw a fierce wind storm raging at Australia's
Mawson base on the coast of East Antarctica. As of Monday morning,
EDT, sustained winds had blown above 50 mph for about 20 hours; at
times, they neared 70 mph. The strong winds whipped snow from the
ground into blinding whiteouts.
It's been even hotter than usual lately in northwestern India and
southeastern Pakistan. Monday, for example, saw 110-degree heat in
these areas. In India, Veraval soared to 110 degrees versus an average
daily high of 89 during April. Surat's 109-degree top mark was 10
degrees above average. Southeastern Pakistan registered highs of 111
and 110 degrees, respectively, in Pad Idan and Nawabshah with these
readings also about 10 degrees above average.
Unusually heavy rains pelted Bangkok, Thailand, Sunday to Monday.
Rainfall was about 3.6 inches within 24 hours versus the mean rainfall
during all of April which is 2.3 inches. On a positive note, these rains
brought relief from the typical spring heat here. Monday's high was 83
degrees whereas the previous seven days had lows in the lower 80s and
highs of 98-100 degrees.
As of early Monday, Tropical Cyclone Isang was south-southwest of
Diego Garcia, centered near 17.5 degrees south and 68.8 degrees east.
Movement was to the south-southwest at 9 mph with top sustained winds
around 45 mph. A south-southwest track and little fluctuation in
strength are expected over the next 24 hours. Isang will weaken
thereafter as it moves into an unfavorable environment.
Tropical Cyclone Adeline was southwest of the Cocos Islands,
near 13.8 degrees south and 93.8 degrees east. Movement was to the
west-southwest at 15 mph with top sustained winds around 35 mph. A
continued west-southwest track and some additional strengthening are
expected over the next day or two.
Tropical rains drenched portions of Venezuela this weekend. One
such tropical downpour dumped nearly 2 inches of rain on the city of
Acarigua within 6 hours Sunday morning. This amount is equal to over
half over their normal rainfall for the entire month of April, which
is around 3.35 inches.
Unusual early spring warmth has spread into portions of central and
southern Mongolia over the past couple of days. Strong westerly winds
accompanied the warmth kicking up blowing sand and dust across much
of the region as well. At Huzhirt, for example, the temperature Monday
reached a balmy 69 degrees following a 60-degree top reading on
Sunday. These readings are 14-23 degrees above their average
April high temperature of 46 degrees.
Strong southerly winds blowing over the southern Norwegian
Highlands caused temperatures to jump to a warm high of 63 degrees at
Stavanger, Norway on Sunday. This is well above their normal high of
45 degrees.
