Heavy rain has been triggered along a slow-moving frontal boundary
across Paraguay and southern Brazil the past couple of days. In
southern Brazil, Santa Maria had 4.13 inches Friday through Sunday,
while Passo Fundo had 4.91 inches. Campos Novos bore the brunt of the
deluge with a whopping 10.53 inches. Across the border in Paraguay,
Pilar had 5.43 inches since early Friday, while Encarnation received
5.63 inches.
Late season chill has descended on southeast Europe. At the same
time, moisture streaming in from the Mediterranean has produced snow
over parts of Turkey. The mountainous terrain over central Turkey has
had a few inches of snow. Even in the capital city, Ankara, the snow
managed to accumulate as temperatures were just below freezing and the
snow was briefly heavy.
As of Sunday evening, newly formed tropical cyclone Isang
(Meteo-France) was in the southwestern Indian Ocean near 15.4 south and
70.2 east. The circulation is becoming better organized and maximum
sustained winds were 40 mph. It is expected to drift off to the
southwest over open seas in the next 24-36 hours.
Another tropical cyclone was in the Indian Ocean Sunday evening.
Tropical cyclone Adeline (Australian Buerau of Meteorology) was near
12.8 south, 97.2 east, not far from Cocos Island. This system is
expected to drift west-southwestward, just to the south of Cocos
Island in the next 24-36 hours.
Bangkok, Thailand has been very hot the past 2-3 weeks with
temperatures during this period averaging 3-4 degrees F above the
normal high of 94. It has been unbearably humid as well. Saturday,
the temperature peaked at 98 F while the humidity read nearly 60%.
The combination of these two readings pushed the apparent temperature
to a stifling, life threatening 124 degrees.
Spring has been slow to arrive in Moscow, Russia. March averaged
4-5 degrees colder than normal with only a handful of days warming
above the freezing mark. Snowfall was well above normal totaling 15-20
inches. The snow depth this morning was a mid-winter like 19 inches.
Temperatures will remain several degrees colder than normal over the
next week or two, meaning that the ground may still be snow covered
into the middle of April.
