Heavy rain has doused parts of southwestern British Columbia,
Canada, during recent days. Hardest hit was Vancouver Island where the
storm began Wednesday night. As of early Friday morning, local time,
rainfall was 4.5 inches at Estevan Point. Both Port Hardy and Port
Alberni, meantime, collected 3.2 inches of rain.
Friday was the coldest day so far in this Southern fall at Russia's
Vostok base on the lofty ice cap of East Antarctica. The high of -88
degrees followed a low of -96 degrees. The average temperature, -92
degrees, was 13 degrees below the mean for the date. Friday evening,
local time, the temperature fell to at least -97 degrees.
The transition from March to April was wet in much of northern
Libya, but one spot, Shahat, was especially rainy. Rainfall was 1.1
inches at Shahat within 30 hours as of midafternoon Friday, local
time. Average rainfall here during March is 2.6 inches, but in April
it is just 0.9 of an inch.
Friday, strong winds ripped South West Cape on New Zealand's
Stewart Island. For more than six hours, sustained winds blew 50-65
mph; gusts were, undoubtedly, much higher.
Abnormally hot weather burned some stretches of Atlantic coast in
Morocco this midweek. In Agadir, for example, 100 degrees was reached
on Wednesday, and Thursday's high was 102; the average daily high in
late March is 77. Safi was more than 25 degrees above average in
setting respective highs of 97 and 96 on these two days.
In far southwestern parts of Australia's state of South Australia,
it's been unusually hot lately. Take Nullarbor, for example, where
consecutive highs of 102, 109 and 107 degrees were registered
Wednesday through Friday. For perspective, the average daily high here
as March ends and April begins is 78.
San Juan, Puerto Rico, recorded no measurable rainfall during the
month of March, thereby smashing their previous record for the driest
March ever. The old record was 0.72 of an inch set back in 1970. By
comparison, their average rainfall for the month of March is 2.14
inches.
A much-needed soaking rain drenched southwestern Western Australia
the second half of this week. At Mt. Barker, for example, 6.4 inches of
rain fell in the 54 hours ended early Friday afternoon, local time.
Manjimup received 3.9 inches of rain during this time.
