Roke is now a tropical depression moving away from the Philippines
over the South China Sea. Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Tropical
Depression Roke is centered 245 miles west-southwest of Manila,
Philippines. With its highest sustained winds down to about 30 mph,
Roke is moving west-northwestward at 21 mph. The depression should
continue to weaken on a heading towards the west or west-northwest
during the next 24 hours.
Heavy rainfall over the central Philippines was caused by Tropical
Storm Roke. The storm brought 5.5 inches of rain in less than a 12
hour period to Guiuan, Samar Island. And across the islands, the
highest winds with the storm were reported at tropical storm force
with stronger gusts.
Thursday was springlike in much of western Europe again. In the
United Kingdom, for example, many sites reached the 60s. London's
Heathrow airport registered 66 degrees versus the 50-degree average
high for the date. Aberdeen, in northeastern Scotland, set a high of
62 degrees with this, too, being 16 degrees above average. Northern
France peaked largely in the 60s; Paris topped out at 68. Much of the
southern half of the nation rose into the 70s, however. One of the
warmer sites was Mont-de-Marsan where the 78-degree high was almost 20
degrees above average.
A cold front brought the end to a spell of unusually hot weather
in northwestern sections of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula Thursday. In
Merida, for example, highs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were 108,
103 and 106 degrees, respectively. With a thick overcast that, at
times, shed rain, Thursday saw the temperature fall from the lower
80s during the morning to the lower 70s by middle afternoon.
Early Thursday morning would have been quite cold during the
depths of winter let alone the waning days of the season in
northwestern Russia. Saranpaul' fell to -37 degrees, or a full 40
degrees below average. The low at Pechora, -32, was 42 degrees below
average. Other frigid places included: Salekhard at -36 degrees, Muzhi
at -32 and Mare-Sale at -32.
Rains linked to the former Tropical Cyclone Ingrid proved to be
excessive in parts of northern Western Australia, Australia. Rainfall
from the storm was 10.7 inches at Wyndham and 9.9 inches at Argyle as
of Thursday afternoon, local time.
