Tropical Cyclone Ingrid is now over the Kimberley of northern
Australia following Tuesday`s overnight landfall near Cape
Londonderry, Western Australia. As the storm plowed inland from the
Timor Sea, it rolled over the remote town of Kalumburu, where it
unleashed winds of hurricane strength Wednesday. The southerly track
of Ingrid will lead it to dissipate over the hinterland.

Tropical Storm Roke is crossing the central Phillipines. As of
late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Roke holds highest sustained winds near
65 mph as it heads towards the west at 23 mph. Roke will weaken
further as it heads westwards through the middle of the Philippine
archipelago. After Thursday, it will head for the South China Sea.

As Wednesday dawned, a severe storm gripped Labrador and
Newfoundland, Canada. Along with much of the Labrador coast, the
storm lashed northern Newfoundland Island with snow, blowing snow,
and winds to 60 mph in gusts. Sustained gales and gusts of nearly 60
mph blasted Saint Anthony near the northern tip of the island.

Wednesday, western Europe warmed markedly making memory of the
late-winter cold wave of early March. As of midday, most of France
basked in warmth registering 65 to 75 degrees. Germany, the Low
Countries and even much of England reached 55 to 65 degrees with
upper 60s along the Rhine River in Germany.

Even as the heart of Europe warmed, bitter late-winter cold
gripped northern Scandinavia and much of Finland early Wednesday,
much as it did Tuesday. Cold spots Wednesday were near 30 degrees
below zero. In Sweden, Karesuando bottomed at 25 degrees below zero.
Norway saw 29 degrees below zero at Kautokeino. In Finland, Sodankyla
hit -28 degrees. Many lows across this wide sweep were 30-40 degrees
below average for middle March. The cold snap was felt in cities, too,
at least in Helsinki, Finland: respective overnight lows were 3, 1 and
3 degrees below zero Monday through Wednesday.

Wednesday dawned unusually cold for the waning days of winter in
Canada from northern Ontario to much of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In
northern Saskatchewan, the -34-degree low at Key Lake was about 30
degrees below average. Thompson, northern Manitoba, was almost 25
degrees below average in dipping to -28. The early morning low in
Lansdowne House, Ontario, was -21 degrees whereas the mean daily low
during March is zero.
