Dangerous Tropical Cyclone Ingrid poses a serious threat to the
far north of Queensland, Australia. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the
eye of Ingrid is over the Coral Sea 215 miles north of Cairns,
Queensland. Drifting towards the west at 6 mph, Ingrid wields highest
sustained winds of 120 mph; earlier in the day, top sustained winds
were 150 mph. Ingrid is forecast to drift mostly towards the west;
landfall on the Cape York Peninsula of Queensland could happen during
the late morning or early afternoon on Wednesday, EST.
Abnormal late-summer heat baked near-southern South America
Sunday and Monday. Temperatures topped 100 degrees over much of
northern Argentina, Paraguay, and also northwestern Uruguay and the
southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Artigas,
Uruguay, set back-to-back highs of 102 degrees. Not only was this about
17 degrees above the average daily high, both highs were likely new
record maximums for the month of March. Monday, Salto, Uruguay,
reached a withering 103 degrees; this, too, may have been the hottest
March day on record.
Heavy rains wound down early Tuesday over southeastern
Philippines. At Surigao, at the northern tip of Mindanao, two-day
rainfall was 9.0 inches.
A blizzard clutched the northwestern shoulder of Hudson`s Bay,
Canada, Sunday through Monday. At Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, winds of
35-55 mph kicked up steady whiteouts at temperatures 20 to nearly 30
degrees below zero. Wind chill dipped 65 to 70 degrees below zero.
Vancouver, BC, tied a record high at 60 degrees Monday. The first
week of March was warmer than average by 7.7 degrees. But the unusual
warmth has not been confined to this populous corner of the province;
rather it has spanned all, from sea to inter mountain to northeastern
plains. Fort Saint John, east of the northern Rocky Mountains, has
been warmer than usual by 25.7 degrees with one record high set thus
far (that was set on the 3rd).
Tuesday dawned unusually cold for the time of the year in Ontario,
Canada. Much of the province away from the heavily-populated far
southeast registered lows below zero. With respect to normal, areas to
the north and northeast of Lake Superior were coldest. Timmins dipped
to -27 degrees, for example. Other cold spots were Katatota Island at
-25 degrees and Wawa at -24. All three of these readings were 30-35
degrees below average.
Australia's Mawson research facility on the coast of East
Antarctica weathered severe winds to near hurricane strength early this
week. Sustained winds blew above 50 mph for about 24 hours as of early
Wednesday morning, local time. At their highest, sustained winds were
74 mph. Temperatures hovered in the lower and middle 30s during the
wind-storm.
