Fast-growing Tropical Cyclone Ingrid has quickly become a
dangerous storm over the Coral Sea. Early Monday morning, EST, the
eye of tightly-wound Ingrid is 260 miles northeast of Cairns,
Queensland, Australia. All but stationary, Ingrid packs highest
sustained winds of 135 mph. Ingrid is forecast to drift towards the
southwest over the next two days; such a path would make Ingrid a
serious threat to the tropical shores of Queensland.
Abnormal late-summer heat baked near-southern South America
Sunday. Temperatures topped 100 degrees over much of northern
Argentina, Paraguay, and also northwestern Uruguay and the
southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. For perspective, the
high of 102 degrees set at Artigas, Uruguay, was about 17 degrees
above the average daily high. This was likely an all-time record high
for the month of March. Farther south, beyond the sweltering city of
Buenos Aires, the heat sparked strong, soaking thunderstorms which
unloaded 3.9 inches of rain upon Azul, Argentina.
A blizzard clutched the northwestern shoulder of Hudson`s Bay,
Canada, Sunday into Monday. At Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, winds of 35-55
mph kicked up steady whiteouts at temperatures 20 to nearly 30
degrees below zero. Wind chill dipped 65 to 70 degrees below zero.
Overnight lows early Monday were -42 and -41 degrees,
respectively, at Churchill Falls and Wabush Lake, Labrador and
Newfoundland, Canada. Each was about 35 degrees below the average
low for the date.
March has come in like the dead of winter along the Appenini,
Italy`s mountain spine. Atop 6000-foot Monte Terminillo, about mid
peninsula, snow depth rose by 40 inches within one week; it reached
85 inches Monday.
Another big dump of snow for the hills of northwestern Macedonia.
At Lazaropole, snow depth was boosted from 31 to 51 inches between
Saturday evening and Monday morning. Since January, snow depth here
has been between one and four feet.
The coldest March night on record occurred across the
Netherlands this past Thursday night. Sub-zero readings were
recorded across the country. Marknesse fell to an overnight low
of -5F. Such cold weather capped a week of heavy snows which
buried some parts of the country under 20 inches. This winter has
been the snowiest in the past 50 years for the Netherlands.
Much of Greenland was milder than usual again on Saturday. Parts
of the south and west were exceptionally mild for early March. In the
far south, 55 degrees was reached at Narsarsuaq whereas the average daily
high in March is 27. Elsewhere, highs were 52 and 48 degrees,
respectively, at Sondrestrom and Godthab, both of these marks were
nearly 40 degrees above average.
