"LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- California's latest series of storms
turned deadly Sunday night when mud and boulders roared down an Orange
County hillside, killing one person and destroying two structures,
authorities said.

The latest series of storms arrived Friday, causing two days of scattered
flooding, mudslides that blocked Amtrak service, and generating two small
tornadoes that briefly touched down in San Diego County and Riverside
County. The twisters broke windows, knocked over trees and downed power
lines, but no major injuries were reported.

The landslide occurred as steady, moderate rain continued to soak soggy
Southern California. The rain arrived early Saturday morning and has
continued off and on since then.

A fierce storm was expected to sweep through the region beginning early
Monday. Forecasters estimate it will drench much of the area with 2 to 4
inches of rain before it moves on Wednesday. Foothill areas could get as
much as 10 inches of rain, with elevations above 7,000 feet bracing for as
much as 3 feet of snow.

The current storm created a 40-foot wide sinkhole in Los Angeles' Sun
Valley section that was 30 feet deep Sunday, said Fire Department spokesman
Melissa Kelley. The sinkhole damaged sewer lines and would take several
weeks to repair, she said.

A year of record rainfall has pushed downtown Los Angeles' totals to nearly
30 inches since July 1, marking its seventh wettest season, said NWS
forecaster Curt Kaplan. The record, 38.18 inches, was set in 1883-1884."
