Winchester (nw) VA

After last Thursday surprise snowfall (see below) our area has had very
warm weather for this time of year. My high the last 6 days has averaged
58, and the low 32.8. Those temperatures would be considered "normal" in
late March. My high was 65.5 Tuesday, and 64 today. Neither were
records. We ave not been below freezing since Monday morning.

The following records were noted.

Monday:
Danville VA 63, (old record 56 in 1999)
Dulles Airport (VA) 59 (old 58 in 1965)
Beckley WV 61 (58 in 1999)
Elkins WV 67 (66 in 1925)

Tuesday
Danville VA 71 (69 in 1999)

A cold front tonight will bring rain showers tonight, and a return to
normal temperatures for Thursday & Friday. It's not out of the question
to see a little snow early Thursday. Of course that was also said last
Thursday.

In the mountians, the snow threat is high enough for advisories.

FEB 3rd SURPRISE SNOW

On Feb 3rd, the forecast called for a 50% chance of snow showers.
Instead heavy snow fell, and for a few hours most roads were
treacherous. Local police departments calculated about 50 auto accidents
in the area. About 12 of those were on I-81 and some involved multi
autos & tractor trailers. No serious injuries were reported. The next
most school systems in the area opened 2 hours late. Winchester city
opened on time.

The snow fell at the rate of 2.5" at peak intensity about 12:30pm. The
snow went from covering the ground at noon Thursday, to 3" by 4:30pm.
The water content was only .21" rather low for a snow at 30º. It
rapidly melted in the next 24 hours. On Friday, temperatures reached 50
here, & the snow was gone in all but shaded areas by noon. The snow in
the shade was gone by Sunday.

At Dulles Airport, the 1.4" snowfall set a daily record. No snow had
ever fallen on Feb 3rd since it opened in 1962.
