Tropical Cyclone Meena has attained hurricane-strength over the
South Pacific Ocean and continues to strengthen rapidly. Saturday
afternoon, EST, Meena holds highest sustained winds of 130 mph about a
center which is about 370 miles northwest of Rarotonga, one of New
Zealand's Cook Islands. The cyclone is moving towards the southeast at
12 mph. Meena is forecast to strengthen and to accelerate on a
southeastward heading during the next 24-48 hours. On this course, the
storm will pass near or over Rarotonga on Sunday.

Tropical Cyclone Gerard is now dissipating without ever becoming a
threat to land. As of early Saturday morning, EST, Gerard was about
1,000 miles south-southeast of Saint-Denis, Reunion Island. Maximum
sustained winds had fallen to only 30 mph, and the system was moving
southeasterly at 37 mph. Complete dissipation is forecast over the
next 24 hours.

The end of the week was exceedingly wet across parts of Indonesia.
Manado, a city on the northeastern tip of the island of Sulawesi, was
deluged with 9.45 inches of rain through early Saturday evening, local
time.

In French Polynesia, the week is coming to a close on a wet note
on some islands. Papeete, Tahiti, for example, was pelted by 8.9
inches of rain within 78 hours as of early Saturday evening, local
time.

Tropical downpours broke over Raoul Island, one of New Zealand's
Kermadec Islands, late this week. Within 36 hours, rainfall was 6.8
inches as of Friday night, local time. Raoul Island is about 685
miles to the northeast of Auckland, North Island.

February lies within the heart of the rainy, monsoon season, known
locally as "The Wet", across much of northern Australia. Northern
Territory's Bathurst Island bore the brunt of these tropical downpours
at mid and late week. Rainfall was 14.0 inches within 90 hours as of
early Saturday evening, local time.

In Varna, Bulgaria, Thursday into Friday saw quite a raging
blizzard over the coastal city. Snowfall within 24 hours was 19
inches, and in addition to the snow, winds were gusting upwards of 50
mph.
