February 1, 2005 5:56 p.m.
Tuesday was unusually mild for midwinter in much of Iceland. Highs
of 52, 51 and 50 degrees were registered, respectively, at Dalatangi,
Akureyri and Galtarviti whereas average daily highs at the start of
February are in the lower to middle 30s.
Tuesday, the temperature hovered 50 to 55 degrees below zero
through at least late morning, local time, at Old Crow in Canada's
Yukon Territory. An average first day of February here would have a
low of -29 degrees and a high of -12, so Tuesday was considerably
colder than "normal".
The last week of January was seasonable in Moscow, Russia, but
the first 24 days were so much milder than usual that the month
finished with an average temperature that was more than 15 degrees
above the climatological mean.
Tuesday was a very stormy day in Nagasaki, Japan. Near midday,
winds were sustained at over 40 mph with gusts to over 60 mph! At the
same time, the region was pelted with sea-effect snow squalls coming
off the Korea Strait. Temperatures remained in the mid 30s through
the day, a far cry from the average high of 49. Combined with the
wind, it felt like it was in the teens all day!
Singapore has an average January rainfall of 10.02 inches. This past
January, however, Singapore received just 3.13 inches, and most of
that came during the first week of month. Since the 17th, there has been
no measurable rain. While Singapore is typically a hot place, the
absence of rain has allowed temperatures to run, on average, 2.6 degrees
above the already hot average levels.
Soaking rains flooded parts of eastern Brazil's state of Espirito
Santo late Sunday through Monday. In the state capital, Vitoria,
rainfall was 12.60 inches within 42 hours as of Tuesday morning, with
10.16 inches of that falling within the last 24 hours. The mean
rainfall during all of January is 4.5 inches.
