January 13, 2005 5:51 p.m.

A new tropical depression has formed over the western North
Pacific Ocean near the eastern Caroline Islands. Late Thursday
afternoon, EST, the depression holds highest sustained winds near 30
mph. Centered 145 miles southwest of Chuuk, the depression is moving
towards the northwest at 7 mph. The cyclone is forecast to strengthen
further on a northwestward heading during the next 2-3 days and to
threaten the southern Mariana Islands, including Guam, as a tropical
storm on Saturday.

A strong tropical wave over the North Indian Ocean has the
potential to become a tropical cyclone during the next couple of days.
Thursday morning, EST, the wave was about 500 miles east of Colombo,
Sri Lanka, and it was drifting west-northwestward at 2 mph.

Intense cold maintained its grip on northwestern Canada Thursday.
In Dawson, Yukon Territory, the temperature hovered 50 to 60 degrees
below zero from late Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon. In
middle January, Dawson has a mean daily high of -6 and a mean daily
low of -22, so the temperature was lower than average by about 50
degrees during the daytimes on Wednesday and Thursday.

In parts of central Russia, temperatures have been well above
normal. In Kolpashevo, Russia, the high the past few days has been
well above normal with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday being 33, 34
and 27 respectively. Meanwhile, the normal high is only 2 degrees.
Also, the lows have been 21, 30 and 26 for Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday, meanwhile, the normal low is -9 degrees.

Mildura, Australia and many other locations in southeastern
Australia have continued to see the heat over the past few months,
leading to some of the worst forest fires in the past several years.
The normal high in Mildura is normally 87 degrees. Meanwhile, the
highs have been climbing into the 90s and lower triple digits the past
few days, weeks and months. Tuesday saw a high of 107, Wednesday was
92 and Thursday was 98. And with this excessive heat and little
rainfall, the fires are likely to continue.

Heavy rainfall continues over Kusaie, a small island in the
Caroline Islands. The rainfall over the past 3 days was 7.58 inches.
