Tuesday, Tropical Cyclone Kerry is weakening steadily over the
Coral Sea. Late Tuesday morning, EST, the core of Kerry is 425 miles
west-northwest of Noumea, New Caledonia. Drifting towards the
southeast at 6 mph, Kerry holds highest sustained winds of only 45
mph. Kerry is now forecast to weaken and dissipate along a path
towards the south and the southwest.
Tuesday, withering heat blasted deep into south Australia. In
the state of the same name, temperature soared above 110 degrees with
Port Augusta, at the head of the Spencer Gulf, reaching 113.
Tarcoola, far inland, topped out 112 degrees. In the capital city,
Adelaide, 107 degrees was registered. Farther east, the southerly
state of Victoria had highs above 105 degrees including at least 107
degrees at Horsham. In sprawling Melbourne, temperatures reached 100
degrees, or 23 degrees above average.
Tuesday, an arctic blizzard still gripped the north slope of
Yukon Territory, Canada. Since beginning Sunday, the storm has
unleashed steady winds of 40 to 60 mph at temperatures down to -10
degrees.
The strong atmospheric ridge that has lately pumped Atlantic
warmth through the heart of Europe had a different outcome in store
for the plains of northwestern Spain. Take Virgen del Camino, where
the last few nights have been shrouded in frosty fog which have
barely begun to break daily before thickening anew by evening.
Monday, coldest day in the stretch, had a low of 17 degrees and a
high of 27. Thus, Monday's mean daily temperature was 17 degrees
below average. Contrast this with Dusseldorf, Germany, which reached
60 degrees following a low of 50 Monday. For Dusseldorf, the day was
19 degrees above average.
A storm brought heavy rain and snow to southwestern Iran early
this week. At Yasoge, a cold, soaking rain fell. Rainfall was 2.3
inches with temperatures largely in the lower and middle 30s Monday to
early Tuesday morning. Higher up in the Zagros Mountains, there was
heavy snow. Snow depth was lifted by 13 inches to reach 15 in
Ali-Goodarz and by 11 inches to reach 20 at Shahr-e Kord.
Strong winds swept over most of the British Isles Tuesday with
gales lashing many places. Highest winds were clocked in Scotland,
Northern Ireland and in Ireland. In some cases, the winds were severe
and damaging. On tiny North Rona, an island to the northwest of the
Scottish mainland, for example, sustained winds reached 100 mph early
Tuesday evening, local time.
