Monday, Tropical Cyclone Kerry is over the southern Coral Sea.
Late Monday morning, EST, the core of Kerry is 495 miles west-
northwest of Noumea, New Caledonia. Drifting towards the southeast at
6 mph, Kerry now owns highest sustained winds of 105 mph. Kerry is
forecast to head towards the southeast for the next two to three days.
Two tropical cyclones, Sally and an unnamed storm east of Sri
Lanka, are dissipating over the Indian Ocean. Sally is over the
eastern South Indian Ocean southeast of Australia's remote Cocos
Islands.
Awesome arctic winds raked the Mackenzie River Delta of Northwest
Territories, Canada, Sunday night and Monday. One automated weather
station showed 76-mph gusts and -55-degree wind chill Monday morning.
Sunday and Monday brought further waves of high wind and
drenching rain to western Scotland, northwestern England and parts of
Ireland. Within the Southern Uplands of Scotland, rainfall since
midweek reached about eight inches at a site in the upper Esk Dale
north of flood-weary Carlisle, England. Carlisle, which suffered
serious flooding Saturday, was hit again with flooding Monday owing
to torrential rains in the nearby Cumbrian Mountains and storm tides
on the Solway Firth.
A blizzard gripped a stretch of the Russian Far East Saturday to
Monday. Near the mouth of the Amur River, Nikolayevsk na Amure picked
up 30 inches of new snow, with snow depth ending at about 50 inches.
With the storm came marked warming -- from -26 degrees as the first
flakes flew, to 26 degrees as the storm wound down.
Stormy southwesterly wind flow that has soaked northwestern
Europe lately has also boosted temperatures far above average. Monday
morning, London, England, dipped no lower than 53 degrees. In
Germany, the mean temperature for the month thus far rose to 11.6
degrees above average. Oddly, perhaps, the warming flow skipped by
Iberia, where Madrid, Spain, started with a cold 22 degrees Monday
morning.
In southern Bolivia, rainfall was 5.8 inches within 24 hours as
of Monday afternoon at Yacuiba.
The new year has been unusually mild across most of Europe.
Central and eastern sections of the continent have been especially
mild in comparison to normal with average temperatures generally 5-15
degrees above the mean through the first 9 days. Some places had
even greater departures from normal. In Moscow, Russia, for example,
the average temperature was about 20 degrees above average during this
span.
