Winchester (nw) VA
WILD TEMP SWINGS
In the first 4 days of 2005, my mean temperature has been 52.2º, or
typical of mid April. Typical early Jan temperatures here are a low of
20 and a high of 40.
Last Friday night, First Night Winchester revellers enjoyed one of the
warmest New Year Eve's in recent memory. Temperatures were near 60 that
evening.
On Saturday, I had a high of 66, but it was not a record. About 3
stations did set records in VA, but I did not take notes & they are no
longer in the NWS queue.
The front sagged south of the region Sunday and temps fell into the 40s
in the afternoon.
It returned north Monday, and the temp rebounded to 65º. Monday night,
it stayed in the low 60's overnight!
On Tuesday, it reached 66.6 about noon before the front pushed south. By
late evening it had fallen to 48.
I thought the low 60s overnight was unusual, until checking the data
from the same date a year ago. On Jan 4th, 2004 it was in the low 60s
overnight, and a midday high of 74 ( a record) then colder later in the
day.
The NWS wrote the following in the 4am Tuesday AFD:
" JAN 4..1 AM..62 DEGS OUTSIDE. UTTERLY INCREDIBLE. ACCORDING TO OUR
CLIMATE PROGRAM THE HIGHEST OVERNIGHT LOW TEMP AT IAD IN THE 1ST 5 DAYS
OF ANY JAN IS 55 (1/3/00). IN FACT THE MAX LOW FOR 1/4 IS 51 ('97) SO
THAT SHOULD BE SMASHED. DCA AND BWI...W/ MUCH LONGER PDS OF RECORD...WL
NOT BE ECLIPSED. "
As the cold air oozed south, some wild swings in the temperatures were
noted.
At 3pm Frederick MD (40 miles NW of Washington DC) was 54. In
Fredericksburg VA (55 miles south of Washington) it was 75. That's a
21º difference in 70 miles distance!
We have not been below freezing since Dec 28th.
While we fell far from the record, others did tie or break records in
the mid Atlantic on Tue 1/04:
Record warm low: Blacksburg VA 51 (old record was 50 in 2004)
Record Tying Highs:
Danville VA 74 (tie from 1950)
Elizabeth City NC 75 (tie from 2004 & 1950)
Richmond VA 76 (tie from 1950)
Today, it's fallen thru the 40's, and at 6pm it's 39º. We have had
.23" of rain & drizzle since midday Tuesday, mostly overnight last
night.
We were under a Winter Storm Watch for a time from 11pm Tueday for
tonight in elevations above 1000', then 1500'. It has since been
dropped. It was for the threat of freezing rain.
It is forecast to return into the 60s by early next week.

TSUNAMI aftermath
For those that are interested in contributing to relief efforts, the
Better Business Bureau has collected information on organizations
working in the region. The information is from a previously established
database.
