January 1, 2005 8:43 a.m.

Torrential rains pounded Batticaloa on the eastern shores of Sri
Lanka since Thursday. Heaviest of the cloudbursts struck Friday into
Friday night and, in all, the outbursts left 13.3 inches of rain.

The last two to three days have had an early dose of Big Wet over
Australia`s tropical far north. Three-day rainfall of five to ten
inches being plentiful over such northern districts as the Kimberley,
Arnhem Land and the Cape York Peninsula, one spot, Point Stuart,
Northern Territory, has checked in with 13.3 inches over a 72-hour
stretch. The rains, which are part of the yearly wet monsoon, are
being driven in part by a broad trough related to a tropical cyclone
over the eastern Indian Ocean.

A tropical cyclone is over the Indian Ocean off northwestern
Australia. Early Saturday morning, EST, this un-named storm holds
highest sustained winds near 40 mph about a center which is 260 miles
to the north of Broome, Western Australia; it is slipping towards the
north-northeast at 4 mph. The cyclone is forecast loiter off
northwestern Australia whilst strengthening during the next 2-3 days.

Icy-cold bora winds have screamed through breaks in the Coast
Ranges of British Columbia, Canada, since mid week. One such spot in a
fjord near Bella Coola registered winds of 50 to 70 mph Thursday
evening through Saturday morning. Temperatures fell from about 30 to
as low as 21 degrees as a tongue of shallow arctic air poured off the
continent as if water over a dam.

2004 was a very wet year on the island of Guam in the western
North Pacific Ocean. The year ended with a rainfall tally of 139.3
inches whereas the annual average here is about 85.5 inches; the
surplus, therefore, was more than 50 inches! The high rainfall total
was due, in large part, to an active tropical cyclone season which
saw several storms, a couple of them full-fledged typhoons, pass near
or directly over the island.
