Tropical Depression Talas is stumbling along to the northwest over
the southern Philippine Sea. Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Talas is
located 705 miles east of Manila, Philippines. The depression is
making for the northwest at 6 mph with 35-mph top sustained winds.
Talas is forecast to veer towards the north over open seas east of the
Philippines within the next few days; little or no strengthening is
foreseen.
Midweek brought heavy snows to eastern Turkey. Mountains off the
southeastern end of the Black Sea likely picked up heaviest of these,
as water equivalent of rain at low elevation was enough for snowfall
of a few feet. Well to the south, in the high, dry basin of Lake Van,
the namesake town picked up 25 inches of snowfall, most of it early
Wednesday, but with dustings into Thursday.
Nasty, bitterly cold winds swept over stretches of Russia's arctic
shore Thursday. At Dickson, the temperature was below -20 degrees as
sustained, offshore winds blew steadily at 45 to 50 mph. Wind chill
was at least 60 degrees below zero. Snow on the ground was whipped
into blinding whiteouts.
Thursday, a western heat wave worsened in Australia. Indeed, a
tongue of fiery heat licked across the full height of the vast state
of Western Australia. It was at least as hot as 116 degrees, this
being the high at Dampier near the northwestern shore. Far inland and
to the south, Leonora saw at least 112 degrees early in the
afternoon. Even to the chill Southern Ocean near Esperance, the
110-degree mark was reached ahead of a cooling wind shift and sea
breeze.
A blistering wave of heat rolled over near-southern South America
Tuesday and Wednesday. Wednesday, Santiago del Estero reached 109
degrees. In Paraguay, Prats-Gil topped out 108 degrees.
The heat over near-southern South America was broken by a
northbound cold front on Thursday. In some cases the change in the
weather was dramatic. Prats-Gil, Paraguay, for example, saw afternoon
temperatures in the lower 70s on Thursday whereas Wednesday's high was
108 degrees. In Camiri, Bolivia, Wednesday afternoon reached 97
degrees, but exactly 24 hours later the temperature was 68 degrees in
the wake of heavy thunderstorms which left rainfall of 4.2 inches
within six hours.
Chinook warming has broken east of the Canadian Rocky Mountains
following a short-lived cold wave. Daybreak, Thursday, found the
temperature above the 40-degree mark, or more than 30 degrees above
the average daily low of 7 degrees, at Calgary, AB. Indeed, since the
end of a cold snap last week, mean temperature has been at least 13
degrees above average. Also Thursday morning, Dawson Creek, BC, the
daybreak temperature was 43 degrees. While not the low, this reading
was 45 degrees above the average low of -3 degrees.
Thursday was unusually chilly over northwestern sections of the
Mideast, including Iraq. In Syria, the highland town of An Nabk could
only muster a high of 30 degrees with this mark being about 20 degrees
below average. Also in Syria and hard against the Iraqi border, Abu
Kamal peaked at 44 degrees. In eastern Jordan, Ar Ruwayshid was far
under its 63-degree mean daily December high in reaching only 41.
Similarly, Badanah, northern Saudi Arabia, was about 20 degrees too
cool for an average December day; the high was 43.
Wednesday, the city of Guadalajara, western Mexico, was no warmer
than 53 degrees whereas the average daily high in December is 74. A
thick overcast with occasional showers was behind the abnormal chill.
