Tropical Storm Talas is plying the southeastern Philippine Sea.
Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, Talas holds highest sustained winds of 45
mph about a center which is 245 miles northwest of Yap Island,
Federated States of Micronesia. The storm is moving generally towards
the west at 11-12 mph. Talas is forecast to head northwestward and to
stay over open seas for at least the next three days during which time
little change in strength is anticipated.
Far northern Canada grew colder still on Tuesday. On Ellef Ringnes
Island, the temperature plummeted to -54 degrees at Isachsen.
Ellesmere Island had -48-degree readings at Eureka and Alert, these
marks being 12 and 20 degrees below average, respectively.
It's been quite unsettled lately in northeastern Turkey. Take
Hopa, a coastal town on the Black Sea, for example. Precipitation here
was 5.3 inches from early Saturday to late Tuesday. This came mostly
as rain, but the air turned cold enough for some snow to fall Tuesday
evening.
Over the past 3 days in Morondava, Madagascar, over 5.71 inches of
rain fell as of Tuesday. This heavy rainfall over the past 3 days made
for above average rainfall for the month. The heavy rainfall looks to
be over, though more rainfall will be nearby with a storm off the
eastern coastline.
Much of northern Europe continues to be dry as little in the way
of rain has fallen for the entire month. London, England, for example,
has only seen 0.02 of an inch of rain this month, making it well below
the normal rainfall of 0.80 of an inch. This trend continues into
Paris, France where 0.09 of an inch has fallen, well below the 0.84 of
an inch of rain which would be average to this date. And the most
extreme of them all, Berlin, Germany has seen a trace of rainfall 4
days this month, but has had no measurable rainfall making it 0.7 of
an inch below normal.
Abnormal heat over Australia Tuesday brought temperatures
to over 100 degrees in Perth, Australia. The high climbed to
107 degrees on Tuesday, well above the normal high temperature
of 80 degrees. In fact, Monday saw a high temperature of 95
degrees, making the past 2 days well pronounced that summer is
around the corner in the southern hemisphere.
