"A FREAK storm hit Murray Bridge yesterday, dumping 80mm of rain – more
than three inches – in just over an hour and damaging nearly 100 homes and
shops. During the deluge – which started about 11am – the city received
almost a quarter of its 340mm average annual rainfall. The front yard of
Clem and Mabel Hill's Adelaide Rd home had almost half a metre of water
flowing through it.

There has been a week of heavy rain in and around the town. By noon
yesterday, dozens of roads were closed and emergency services were
attending 95 houses or businesses. Many residents estimated their flood
damage at $20,000. The Bureau of Meteorology said the storm was a "very
large cell" which then moved towards Strathalbyn.

Murray Bridge Council CEO David Altmann said he had never seen anything
like it. "Having lived here for nearly 40 years, this is the wettest week
I can remember," he said. "We've had about 150mm since Tuesday – other
parts have had more.""
